Get Golf Season Ready
Optimize Physiotherapy Pre-Season Golf Tips
Golf Season is right around the corner, and if you’re like us, you’re counting down the days until you can step onto the course. You’re itching to dust off your clubs and finally tee off again.
However, before diving headfirst into the game, it’s important to take a moment to check in on how you’re feeling.
How are your shoulders, knees, and back feeling? Before swinging that club on the first hole, it’s worth checking in with your body to ensure you’re in top form for the season ahead.
We know it’s super tempting to strut your stuff on the course and breathe in that fresh air, but we’d love it if you didn’t wrench your back the first time out. We’re guessing you’d agree!
So, before you load up your clubs and head out, here are a few tips to help you prepare for a stellar golf season:
Ease into it: If you haven’t swung a club since last fall, walking onto the course cold or even heading to the range and smashing two extra-large buckets of balls isn’t a good idea. We know it’s tempting; hey, we may have even been guilty of this ourselves, but we highly recommend starting slowly! Starting with some easy swings at the range and gradually increasing your practice time can help prevent injury and improve your game.
Maintain your strength training routine: If you’ve been hitting the gym all winter and feel strong, keep going! There’s no reason to stop.
If strength training isn’t part of your winter life and you have taken a break, this is the time to get back to it. Strength training is crucial for preventing injuries and can enhance your performance on the course.
Be proactive about your past injuries: If you’ve had an injury in the past, now is the time to dig up the rehab exercises your physio prescribed for you and get to work.
It might also be a good idea to visit us for some new exercises to support your golfing this season. We like to say, “The best way to treat injuries is to prevent them.”
The Optimize team has been in the gym for a few weeks, working on our golf season prep. Besides a bit of putting practice and some healthy competition for who has the best drive, we’ve developed a set of “fore” exercises designed to help you get ready, too.
These exercises are specifically tailored to improve spinal rotation, build arm power, and strengthen wrists to enhance your grip on the club.
- Half-Kneeling Thoracic Rotation on the Wall
- Banded Archer Pull
- Standing Banded Chop
- Eccentric Wrist Flexor Strengthening
We want you to feel confident and strong as you step onto the course for the first time this season. If you’re looking for personalized guidance and support, we encourage you to book your next appointment with us.
Let’s make this golf season your best one yet!
